New website launched by Geographical Association to support students

Geography Education Online (GEO) https://geographyeducationonline.org/about is an innovative new website created by the Geographical Association for students studying GCSE and A level geography and their teachers. GEO provides ways for those studying geography to extend their knowledge and thinking whether they are studying in school or at home. The website provides free access to live online sessions with fieldwork tutors, and live academic lectures.

The website features interactive content on several geographical themes at both GCSE and A level with a range of human and physical topics.  Students can download PowerPoint presentations which provide an overview of key aspects of geography related to exam specifications for example on nutrient cycles, hedgerows as local ecosystems, and global commons.  The human and physical geography units enable students to work through a topic with links to further resources, websites and related activities. There are references to case studies, as in Overseas Aid – to much or never enough which focuses on the 2010 Haiti earthquake.  Quizzes are provided to help with consolidation and revision of topics. In the Geographical Skills and Enquiry section, advice on fieldwork and independent investigations includes ways to plan, develop and write up investigations and links to the specification requirements.

Teachers will find this site provides a source of useful and relevant online resources for their students on exam courses. Students will be able to work through units on their own at home or as part of a class activity. More topics and resources will be added to the GEO website as the autumn term progresses. GEO was created through a grant from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency which is part of UK Research and Innovation. Innovate UK are funding a wide range of new ideas to help overcome the disruption caused by COVID-19 including disruption caused to geography education. https://geographyeducationonline.org/about
