Cheddar Gorge, Somerset
Cheddar Gorge
Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills of Somerset is the finest example of a limestone gorge in Britain. Contrary to popular belief, Cheddar Gorge is not a collapsed cavern, but a feature cut by surface drainage from periglacial meltwater floods. There are a number of show caves to visit in the lower section of the gorge.
A fascinating short circular walk that takes in the high cliffs on each side of the gorge can be found in the ‘Places to Walk’ section.
